Why are Google Ads conversions lower than my Shopify sales?
Short answer
Google Ads only counts orders it can tie to an ad click, so it will always show fewer purchases than Shopify's total. A large or sudden gap usually means the purchase tag stopped firing (often after the Thank you page upgrade), visitors declined cookies, or the purchase action isn't set as Primary.
Why it happens
- Only ad-driven orders count. Shopify counts every order: organic, email, direct and other ads. Google Ads counts only orders after a click (or view) on a Google ad, within the conversion window.
- The purchase tag stopped. Code that lived in the old Additional Scripts box stopped running when your Thank you page was upgraded. Orders keep coming in; Google stops hearing about them.
- Consent and blockers. Visitors who decline cookies, use ad blockers or browse in strict privacy modes aren't measured directly. With Consent Mode, Google models some of them; without it, they're simply missing.
- Purchase action set to Secondary. Only Primary actions appear in the Conversions column. A working purchase action set to Secondary records sales you won't see there.
- Click-date reporting and lag. Google reports a conversion on the day of the ad click, not the order. Recent days fill in over the following week, so the last few days always look low.
How to fix it
- Compare like for likeFilter Shopify orders to those with utm_source=google or a Google Ads referrer, for the same dates and time zone. Compare that with the Primary purchase action, not with all orders.
- Find the date it droppedChart Google Ads purchases by day for 90 days next to Shopify orders. A step down on one date points to a tag change or the Thank you page upgrade.
- Check the tag firesPlace a test order and open Google Tag Assistant on the confirmation page. The purchase conversion should fire once, with the order value.
- Check the action settingsIn Goals › Conversions › Summary, make sure exactly one purchase action is Primary and its status is Recording conversions.
- Turn on Consent Mode and enhanced conversionsThe Google & YouTube app supports both. They recover part of what cookie refusals and blockers hide, without collecting anything extra on your side.
Check it worked
Over a full week, Google Ads purchases should be steady against Shopify orders tagged as Google. The ratio can be below 100%, but it shouldn't suddenly fall.
Common questions
What gap is normal?
There's no fixed number. Compare against orders tagged as coming from Google, not your total, and watch the trend. A steady ratio is attribution; a sudden drop is a tracking problem.
Will Google backfill missed conversions?
No. Purchases the tag never sent are gone. Fix the tag and judge campaigns on data from that date on.
Should I import purchases from GA4 instead?
Use one source as Primary. Importing GA4 purchases alongside the Google Ads tag, both as Primary, counts the same order twice.
