Why are Google Ads conversions higher than my Shopify sales?

Short answer

Google Ads reports more purchases than Shopify when the same order is counted by more than one conversion action or tag, when view-through or cross-device conversions are included, or when the value includes tax and shipping. A gap that suddenly jumps from one date almost always means a tag was added twice.

Why it happens

  • Two primary purchase actions. A Google Ads tag, the Google & YouTube app and purchases imported from GA4 can all be set as Primary. Each one counts the same order.
  • The tag installed twice. Code in the theme or Google Tag Manager plus the app, both sending the purchase conversion.
  • Every vs One counting. If the confirmation page loads again, an action set to count every conversion can count the order twice.
  • View-through and cross-device conversions. Google can credit sales after an ad view or on another device. These appear in some columns and never as extra Shopify orders.
  • Different value definitions. A conversion value that includes tax and shipping is larger than Shopify’s net sales figure for the same orders.

How to fix it

  1. List the purchase actionsIn Goals › Conversions › Summary, list every action in the Purchase category and its source. Keep one as Primary and set the rest to Secondary.
  2. Find the date it jumpedChart conversions by day next to Shopify orders. Check what changed on the day the gap appeared: an app install, a GTM publish or a theme edit.
  3. Look for a double tagOn the order confirmation page, use Google Tag Assistant and check whether the purchase conversion fires twice or from two places.
  4. Compare the right columnCompare Shopify orders with the Conversions column for the Primary action only, not All conv., which includes view-through and secondary actions.
  5. Match the valueCheck whether your purchase value includes tax and shipping, and compare it with the matching Shopify figure.

Check it worked

Place a test order and use Tag Assistant on the confirmation page. One purchase conversion should fire, once, with the order’s value.

Common questions

Will setting extra actions to Secondary lower my results?

The Conversions column will drop to the real count. Automated bidding then learns from real orders instead of doubled ones.

Is a small gap normal?

Google credits conversions to the click date and uses its own attribution, so daily numbers rarely match exactly. A steady small gap is expected; a sudden jump is not.
