Why does GA4 show “(not set)” as the source for Shopify purchases?
Short answer
GA4 shows “(not set)” when a purchase event arrives without the session that brought the buyer to your store. On Shopify this happens with admin and draft orders, express checkouts, payment redirects and visitors who refused cookies, so some “(not set)” is normal and some can be reduced.
Why it happens
- Orders with no browser session. Draft orders, admin orders, POS sales and subscription renewals have no website visit to take a source from.
- Express checkout and payment redirects. When a buyer pays on another site and comes back, the link to the original visit can break, or the payment site can replace the source.
- Consent refusals. If a visitor refuses analytics cookies, GA4 may record the purchase without the details of the visit.
- Missing campaign tags. Ad links without UTM tags or auto-tagging leave GA4 with nothing to name the source.
How to fix it
- Split by order typeIn Shopify, filter orders by sales channel. Compare Online Store orders with GA4 purchases; admin, POS and subscription orders shouldn’t be in the comparison.
- Check auto-tagging and UTMsTurn on auto-tagging in Google Ads, and add UTM tags to Meta, TikTok and email links.
- Exclude payment domainsIn GA4 Admin › Data streams › Configure tag settings › List unwanted referrals, add the payment providers you use, so they don’t replace the real source.
- Check the purchase sourceMake sure purchases reach GA4 from one source only: Shopify’s Google & YouTube app or a custom pixel in Settings › Customer events, not both.
Check it worked
Over the next week, the share of Online Store purchases with “(not set)” source should fall. Admin and subscription orders will still show it, which is expected.
Common questions
Is “(not set)” a tracking error?
Not always. Orders created outside a website visit can never have a source. It points to a problem when it suddenly grows for normal online orders.
Can I fix past data?
No. GA4 doesn’t rewrite past sessions, so judge the fix on new purchases.
