Why don’t Google Ads conversions match Shopify orders?

Short answer

Google Ads credits a conversion to the day of the ad click and counts conversions for up to 30 days after it by default, while Shopify records the order on the day it’s placed. Big gaps usually come from consent settings, a second conversion tag, or the wrong conversion action being used for bidding.

Why it happens

  • Click date vs order date. Google reports the conversion on the day of the click, so recent days keep filling in for weeks.
  • Conversion window. The default click window for purchase conversions is 30 days.
  • Consent and blocking. Visitors who decline cookies or block scripts can’t be measured directly.
  • Duplicate conversion actions. A GA4-imported purchase and a Google Ads tag both counted as primary.
  • Cross-device and modelled conversions. Google may include conversions it estimates rather than observes.

How to fix it

  1. Check primary actionsIn Google Ads › Goals › Conversions, make sure only one purchase action is set to Primary.
  2. Check the appMake sure Shopify’s Google & YouTube app is connected and its conversion tracking is on, and remove old Google Ads code from the theme.
  3. Check consent settingsIn Settings › Customer privacy, check which regions require consent. A banner applied to all regions hides more visitors than one applied only where the law requires it.
  4. Compare by conversion timeIn Google Ads, add the “Conv. (by conv. time)” column to compare with Shopify by order date.
  5. Match a few ordersTake 20 recent paid-search orders in Shopify and look for a pattern in those Google missed: payment method, country or device.

Check it worked

Place a test order and confirm the purchase appears in Google Ads (it can take a few hours) and only once.

Common questions

Should Google Ads match Shopify exactly?

No. Expect a steady gap. Investigate when it changes suddenly or when Google reports more than Shopify.

Why do Google and Meta both claim the same sale?

Each platform counts sales it can link to its own ads, so one order can be claimed by both.
