How can a Shopify store spot fake or low-quality ad traffic?

Short answer

Compare what the ad platform says it delivered with what arrived in your store. Many link clicks but few landing page views, sessions that last a second, visits from countries you don’t target, or add-to-carts that never reach checkout all point to bots, accidental clicks or poor placements rather than real shoppers.

Why it happens

  • Accidental and in-app clicks. Placements inside apps and games produce clicks from people who never meant to visit, and many close the page before it loads.
  • Bots. Automated visits load pages and sometimes add to cart, but never buy. They inflate sessions and lower conversion rate.
  • Broad or wrong targeting. Traffic from countries you don’t ship to, or audiences far outside your buyers, looks busy but doesn’t convert.
  • Events counted twice. A doubled pixel makes add-to-carts and checkouts look higher than real, which can be mistaken for interest.

How to fix it

  1. Clicks vs landing page viewsIn Meta Ads Manager, add Link clicks and Landing page views. If landing page views are far below link clicks, look at placements and page speed.
  2. Check placementsBreak results down by placement. Pause placements with many clicks and no Shopify orders.
  3. Check sessions by locationIn Shopify Analytics, look at sessions by country. Sudden traffic from countries you don’t target is a warning sign.
  4. Check engagementIn GA4 or Shopify, look at sessions from paid traffic that end within a few seconds. A large share of these is unusual for real shoppers.
  5. Compare carts with real checkoutsCompare add-to-carts reported by the platform with Shopify’s sessions that reached checkout. A big gap can be bots, a doubled pixel or a checkout problem.

Check it worked

After pausing poor placements or locations, link clicks should fall less than Shopify orders rise, and cost per real order should improve.

Common questions

Does Meta charge for fake clicks?

Meta says it filters invalid activity and doesn’t charge for clicks it detects as invalid. Low-quality real clicks, such as accidental taps, are still charged.

Can bots trigger Purchase events?

Rarely, because a purchase needs a completed checkout. Purchases with no matching orders are usually a tracking problem, not bots.
