How do I stop my Meta pixel firing twice on Shopify?

Short answer

A pixel fires twice when two things load it: usually old pixel code in the theme plus Shopify’s Facebook & Instagram app, or two apps that both send Meta events. Remove every source except the Facebook & Instagram app, then check that each event fires once.

Why it happens

  • Theme code plus the app. Pixel code pasted into theme.liquid years ago keeps running after the app is installed.
  • Two tracking apps. Apps for reviews, upsells or analytics sometimes include their own Meta pixel.
  • Two pixel IDs. An old pixel and a new one both installed. Sales split or double across them.
  • Google Tag Manager. A Meta tag inside GTM running alongside the app.

How to fix it

  1. See what loadsInstall the Meta Pixel Helper extension in Chrome and open a product page. Note every pixel ID and how often PageView fires.
  2. Clean the themeIn Online Store › Themes › Edit code, search for “fbq(” and “connect.facebook.net”. Remove the snippet if the Facebook & Instagram app is connected. Duplicate the theme first so you can roll back.
  3. Check Customer eventsSettings › Customer events lists app and custom pixels. Remove extra Meta pixels or disable Meta events in those apps.
  4. Check Tag ManagerIf you use GTM, pause any Meta tags that duplicate the app.

Check it worked

Reload a product page with Pixel Helper: one pixel ID, PageView once. Add to cart: AddToCart once. Then run a test order with Events Manager › Test events open.

Common questions

Does a double pixel affect ad results?

Yes. Doubled add-to-carts and purchases make ads look better than they are, and Meta optimises on inflated numbers.

Is browser plus server the same as firing twice?

No. Sending each event from the browser and the server is recommended, as long as both carry the same event ID so Meta counts it once.

Will removing theme code break tracking?

Not if Shopify’s Facebook & Instagram app is connected with data sharing on; it sends the events itself. Duplicate the theme first so you can roll back.
