Why don’t TikTok Ads conversions match Shopify orders?
Short answer
TikTok credits a conversion to an ad inside its attribution window, which includes views as well as clicks, so it can claim orders that came through other channels. Gaps that jump suddenly usually come from the TikTok pixel being installed twice or Purchase events going missing.
Why it happens
- View-through attribution. TikTok can count a purchase after someone only watched an ad, not just after a click.
- The pixel installed twice. Shopify’s TikTok app plus old pixel code in the theme, or a second app sending TikTok events.
- Missing server events. Without the Events API connection, purchases the browser misses are lost.
- Click date vs order date. Platform reports and Shopify can put the same sale on different days.
How to fix it
- Check the attribution settingIn TikTok Ads Manager, look at the attribution window used for your reports and compare click-based conversions separately from view-through.
- Use one connectionConnect the pixel through Shopify’s TikTok app and remove any TikTok pixel code from the theme.
- Turn on server eventsIn the TikTok app’s data sharing settings, choose the highest level so events are sent from the server too.
- Compare on whole weeksCompare TikTok purchases with Shopify orders from TikTok traffic (UTM source or referrer) week by week.
Check it worked
Use TikTok Events Manager’s test events with a test order. Purchase should arrive once.
Common questions
Should I judge TikTok ads on view-through conversions?
Use click-based results to compare ads, and Shopify orders to judge total sales.
Why is TikTok higher than Shopify’s TikTok orders?
View-through sales have no TikTok visit in Shopify, so Shopify can’t credit them.
