Why does Meta show fewer purchases than Shopify?
Short answer
Meta only counts sales it can tie to an ad within its attribution window, so orders from email, search, repeat customers and shoppers who declined tracking never appear. If the gap suddenly widens from one date, Purchase events have stopped reaching Meta, often after a checkout or app change.
Why it happens
- Orders no ad caused. Shopify counts every order. Meta only counts orders it can link to someone who clicked or saw an ad.
- Tracking opt-outs. Cookie-banner refusals and iPhone users who opted out of tracking can’t be matched by the browser pixel.
- Data sharing below Maximum. Without server events, purchases the browser misses are lost.
- Checkout changes. Purchase code that lived on the old order status page or in Additional Scripts stops running after Shopify’s checkout upgrade.
How to fix it
- Turn data sharing to MaximumIn Shopify’s Facebook & Instagram app, open the data sharing settings and choose Maximum.
- Look at the Browser vs Server splitIn Events Manager open Purchase and compare browser and server counts by day. A server line that drops to near zero on one date shows when the loss started.
- Check your checkout upgrade dateSettings › Checkout shows whether and when the store upgraded. Compare it with the date the gap widened.
- Compare only ad-driven ordersIn Shopify, filter orders to Online Store and to visits from Facebook or Instagram (UTM source or referrer) before comparing with Meta.
Check it worked
Place a test order. Purchase should arrive in Events Manager from both Browser and Server, marked as deduplicated.
Common questions
Is it bad if Meta shows fewer sales than Shopify?
Not by itself. It becomes a problem when the gap grows, because campaigns optimising on purchases then learn from fewer sales than really happened.
Will reconnecting the app fix it?
Sometimes, but reconnecting without checking can create duplicate events. Check the Browser vs Server split first, then reconnect only if server events are missing.
Can I recover purchases Meta missed?
No. Meta doesn’t backfill lost events, so annotate the affected dates in your reporting.
