Meta shows more Black Friday sales than Shopify. Which number is right?
Short answer
Shopify’s order count is the real number of sales. Meta credits a sale to an ad up to 7 days after a click or 1 day after a view, and over Black Friday Cyber Monday shoppers see ads from many brands and come back through email or search, so Meta claims orders its ads didn’t drive. A steady gap is normal; Meta purchases on a day with no Shopify orders mean a tracking fault.
Why it happens
- Overlapping attribution windows. In a sale week the same shopper clicks or sees several of your ads, then buys through an email or a Google search. Meta, Google and your email tool can each claim that one order.
- View-through credit. With 1-day view on, a shopper who scrolled past your ad and later bought for another reason still counts as a Meta purchase. Sale weeks bring far more of these shoppers.
- Sales dated to the ad, not the order. A click on Black Friday that turns into an order on Cyber Monday shows on Friday in Meta and Monday in Shopify, so daily numbers never line up across the weekend.
- A tracking change made before the sale. A new theme, a sale-only app or a reconnected Facebook & Instagram app can start sending Purchase twice, or from pages that aren’t checkout.
How to fix it
- Export Meta purchases by dayIn Ads Manager, report purchases by day for 1 November to 7 December, with 7-day click and 1-day view shown as separate columns.
- Export Shopify orders by dayUse the same dates, the Online Store channel only, and remove test and cancelled orders.
- Put both in one time zoneUse the store’s time zone from Settings › General. US stores use their local zone; Australian stores on the east coast use AEDT during November.
- Compare weeks, not daysTotal each week and leave out the last 7 days, so late conversions have arrived before you compare.
- Read the gapIf Meta is higher every week by a similar share, that is attribution overlap. If Meta shows purchases on a day with no Shopify orders, a pixel is loading twice or Purchase is firing outside checkout.
Check it worked
In Events Manager › Test events, place a test order. Purchase should appear once, and not at all when you only load the homepage.
Common questions
Is a 20% gap normal?
It depends on how many of your sales come from view-through and returning customers. What matters is whether the gap is stable week to week.
Should I switch to 1-day click for Black Friday?
For judging spend, yes: it is closer to Shopify’s count. Change it in reporting columns rather than on the ad set, so campaign delivery isn’t affected.
What about Click Frenzy in Australia?
Click Frenzy and Black Friday sit about two weeks apart, so their attribution windows overlap. Compare the whole of November as one block.
Can I fix Meta’s past numbers?
No. Meta doesn’t rewrite past data, so note the dates of any fault and judge those weeks on Shopify orders.
